Disappointed, 12 May 2011

After my Olympus MJU 700 had a lense failure/error code the search for a new camera was on. It was a choice between the Olympus VR-310 and Panasonic Lumix FS30. The Lumix had better reviews, but the Olympus meant i could use my existing batteries & it was a bit cheaper. When i visited the shop, they had sold out of the Lumix, so i purchased this VR-310 instead.
Immediately i noticed that the shutter speed wasn't overly quick (as per reviews), but was disappointed to see that a number of indoor shots were slightly blurred even with the optical and digital image stabilisation. It also gave a yellow 'ish tinge to everything indoors unless i changed the white balance. For day time shots it was fine, good colours, good macro for close ups of plants and the IA works very well with super sharp images. However at night time, it was very hard to get a blur free shot and again the colours just didn't look 'right' with a dark sky having blue uneven patches to it. There was also alot of noise/grain in the pictures. Even with a tri-pod some of the pictures still managed to have a slight blur to them. It seems 'busgirl' who wrote a review also mentioned about blurring.I was also disappointed in that it doesn't have B & W picture option (unlike my previous MJU 700, which although only 7mp i found better). 14mp is not much use if the shots are not sharp.
In the end i returned it to the shop and as i had used my old batteries & didn't have to open any packets I luckily got a full refund. I am now using the Panasonic Lumix FS30/FS35 which is AMAZING & FULLY recommended. Rich natural colours whether indoors, outdoors, at night, completely blur free and shots of London Landmarks at night such as Tower Bridge have no blur or noise at all even when using just hand-held and really look quite professional.

I already have a top of the range Nikon DSLR, but it is not the sort of camera you can take to parties or just have on you when that great shot comes along, so I bought this so that I could have a camera with me all the time. This camera doesn't give me quite the same control over all the settings, but none-the-less, takes very good quality images, and has a very impressive range of features. The 10X optical zoom coupled with a wide angle lens gives an enormous flexibility when it comes to framing the subject, to compose just the view you want, but additionally there is a macro setting which allows you to get very close up and personal, and brings out all the rich detail and colour in nature's "small print".

I did consider, as an alternative to this, buying a more expensive smart-phone than the one I was going to buy, so as to get a better camera on that, but I found even a top of the range smart-phone would only give an 8 Mega-pixel, very basic camera, with very limited features. This camera, with it's 14 Mega-Pixels, 10X, wide angle, optical zoom, macro setting, range of control features, including variable ISO, a reasonable built in flash, and strong metal body, makes any smart-phone camera a very uninviting alternative. Smart-phone cameras are just for recording a quick visual to go with a text message, where this is a real camera, for real photographs.

Another plus point was the price, being about half that of many other comparable cameras, yet having quality written all over it, the camera is real value for money.

My only niggles are -

1) That the motorised zoom is a bit hard to control so that I tend to overshoot the point I want, and so, have to zoom back again: I guess I might get used to it, but a manual zoom is always preferable. I have the same problem with my video camera, so it is probably just the nature of motorised zooms in general, rather than the particular camera.

2) I can't see the screen in bright sunlight. This is also a general problem, I think, as my smart-phone is just the same, and it is a bit frustrating, squinting at the screen and trying to shade it with one hand, to see just enough to get a vague idea of what I'm looking at. We'll have to revert to the black cloth thrown over the head like photographers of old. I really miss the crystal clarity of my DSLR optical viewfinder, but not the bulk and weight that comes with it. The screen is fine otherwise, with very high definition, brightness, colour, and contrast.

Apart from that, I am very pleased with the camera, and it is, now, my constant companion.

As someone who is interested in simple but High Quality Digital Photography, this has to be one of the best Point & Shoot Digital Cameras Olympus has ever produced. From the quality of photographs to the general design & quality of product for the price. This Camera is FANTASTIC!!. It literally takes just a few minutes to set up. As soon as you turn it on, you do the basic set up of the date & time with the facility for this to be shown on the photos you download if you so wish. By setting the camera to the iAuto mode it literally becomes a point & shoot Camera. In my personal opinion Olympus have taken a major step forward with this camera in many respects and also in that the Menu Wheel on such previous products such as the Olympus MJU 7040 has been replaced by simple buttons and directional functions. Though my previous purchase the Olympus MJU 7040 is essentially a Point & Shoot Camera it is a little over complicated for someone like me who wants to take a photograph quickly, but also get a good shot at the same time.

The brilliant 3" screen is also excellent for framing your shots & allows you to position yourself just right before taking that all important photograph.

The software that comes with the Camera is also very good allowing you to edit the photos that you have taken as soon as they have been downloaded onto your computer.
It even allows you to plot where your photo was taken using Google Mapping & Post Codes. Click on the built in software map anywhere in the world down to street level & then tag your photo with that information.

If purchasing this Camera I would also recommend purchasing through the Amazon site the Lowepro Rezo 30 Camera Pouch for around £7.49 which is well padded, comes with a strap & extra space for holding spare Batteries or SD Cards should you need them.

Without doubt a FANTASTIC!! good quality camera for the price. I give it a 5 star rating & recommend it to anyone wanting a good Point & Shoot high spec camera at a very good price.

I have had a bit more of a play with this now & like a number of other contributors have had a few out of focus shots. I have established however that this seems to have alot to do with how quickly you press the shutter button to take the shot. If you press the shutter gently & allow a few extra seconds for the camera to focus you do get a much better result. Unfortunately this site does not appear to allow you to upload examples otherwise I would have been happy to do so to illustrate what I mean. Hope this additional information may be helpful. This is my first tablet and as I had not long bought a new laptop, didn't want to spend too much. I did a lot of research before settling on this one. It arrived in just two days and a query I had was replied to in under 10 mins - very good service. I wanted this to take on holiday and I did just that. It accompanied me around Cambodia and I didn't experience a single issue.

I bought a microsd card 16gb and put some tv programmes, movies, books and music on that. I downloaded Skype and a few free games. All worked perfectly. Wherever I went, I had no problem picking up the free wifi. I like the resistive screen, I know other people prefer capacitative. It is a little heavier than an iPad, I think but it is not as heavy as other tablets that I researched. The battery life isn't phenomenal and web pages take a little time to load. I am only used to a pc so that could be a general tablet thing, I don't know.

All in all, a great purchase.

I wanted a tablet that would allow me to watch my movies/videos, read ebooks, browse the web and access my emails without breaking the bank and this one at £[] appeared to fit the bill, I was not disappointed. The instruction book at first appeared useless but with a little persistence was able to work out how to set up my email accounts and web browser. Watching BBCI player is a doddle and no waiting for the computer to power up, the tablet itself is very easy to hold and not at all heavy. I did not want a 10 inch screen and this 8 inch size is just the right size for me. I have managed to download many apps from the Android Market and they work extremely well (Angry Birds, Kindle etc). The tablet itself appears to be extremely well built and should hopefully last a few years. If I was to compare it I would say it is most like my ITouch but with a bigger screen so more of a pleasure to watch my movies. All in all I am extremely pleased with this tablet and if you don't want to break the bank I recommend the Tabtech A816.

I will receive a free gift but it is an honest review.

Taking it out of the box i was surprised how much bigger it was than expected, it loads apps from market place easily or go on line with your main computer and pick the app you want and if you have got it set up right it'll just download what you want straight on to the tablet (it seemed to download a lot quicker to me this way). All in all a very nice bit of kit

As I'm sure a lot of you will have seen the Gadget shows review of the Panasonic Lumix TZ7 vs the Fuji F200EXR.

I just bought my TZ7 2 weeks ago, and a friend at work has the F200EXR, so I thought I'd do a direct comparison shot for shot. I left both camera's in full auto (Intelligent Auto and EXR Auto). After taking a series of identical shots with both I can honestly say the difference is very small. I would say the EXR sensor is superior and produces slightly more natural looking photo, as the F200EXR generally uses its flash far less. But in contrast some shots the Panasonic might overexpose, the Fuji would under expose making a very dark shot. A close call between them it really is, but the Fuji just beats the Panasonic on image quality, but it is minor, probably more pronounced in low light conditions.

If you could marry the sensors from the Fuji and the Panasonic's other features you'd have one brilliant camera.

The tough choice comes with the other features, for the £40 or so extra you pay for the Panasonic, you get 12x zoon, over a 5x and this really does make a big difference on distance shots. Just taking a shot of a horse in a field the other day, I could zoom to having it in full shot, as opposed to a distant figure taking a quarter of the shot.

The other feature, Video, was the biggest easily comparable difference between the two, the Panasonic just walks all over the Fuji. Comparing two video's side by side, take simultaneously, the Fuji is grainy and a far lower resolution and quality, whereas the Panasonic is sharp, high res and superior in every aspect. Plus you can zoom in the video, big bonus, the Fuji was totally unresponsive when trying to zoom mid video.

To answer a lot of concerns about loose dials, battery life etc. I bought mine from Amazon 2 weeks ago in late August 09, it came with the firmware 1.2. They've obviously fixed the dial now, it clicks into position fine, I can see how in the past it may have been easily knocked, but its fine now.

The battery is good for about 300 shots, I'd say that's accurate, I took 80 shots yesterday, 20 today, and a short video and its dropped one third, it was still showing full after the 80 shots. I have bought a spare myself for day trips out with lots of video in mind. It seems better after its been used for a few charges than the first time it was fully charged.

The zoom can be a little sensitive and takes a bit to get used to the fast zoom speed, but its ok.

Why 4 stars, well it would take a lot to get 5 stars, I still find I need to take 2 shots of things to make sure I get the best photo possible, intelligent auto is good, but it overly uses the flash. If it doesn't pick up a scene it can be best to switch to scene mode and choose the correct one for a good shot. The Fuji was slightly better in that respect, detecting the scene correctly. All in all a great camera, highly recommended, but there's room for improvement.

Personally I would stick with my TZ7 over the F200EXR, but it depends on your priorities.

I've had this camera a week...and it's brilliant.

Picture quality is fantastic - photos are sharp and vibrant.

For pointing and shooting, the camera is the best I've had by far - it has an Intelligent Auto-Mode which is great at detecting what you're photographing and adjusting the settings automatically. This means you don't have to go changing settings from "portrait" to "night scene" to "macro" etc - it's all done for you in an instant. Of course, if you want manual control, you can have it, and even save your favourite settings for quick access. AF tracking is a useful feature too - press the button half way and the camera will lock onto the subject and keep it in focus..even if the subject subsequently moves. This is great for taking pictures of kids and animals.

Video recording is in high definition, and the little I've used it, I'm very impressed with the results. The picture is sharp and colours are accurate. Sound is recorded in stereo. You can record in either AVCHD mode or JPEG.

The camera is sturdy and feels/looks expensive. The screen is fantastic and I've had no problem viewing it in bright conditions (it has no optical view finder). The lens is absolutely superb. Everyone has raved about the 12x optical zoom, but I've found the 25mm wide end of the lens equally impressive - you really can get close to your subjects and still have them all fit in the photo.

There have been some well published criticisms of the TZ7. In my experience they seem largely unfounded. Battery life is quite acceptable: the manual states that you can take about 300 photos per charge but my first charge only managed 150 photos. However, I was doing a lot of experimenting - changing modes, zooming in and out, recording video etc. You should, therefore get at least three or four days of intensive use out of the camera between charges (so long as you're taking photos and not filming). One criticism I would agree with is the price of a spare battery - £40 for a genuine Panasonic! This is very steep, but really is an essential purchase so should be factored in before you buy the camera.

The most telling criticism of the TZ7 has been about the mode dial. Reviewers have reported that it is annoyingly loose and is constantly being knocked out of position. The dial on mine, however, is firm and there is absolutely no danger of it being moved accidentally either by my finger or when putting it in / removing it from a case. In fact the discrepancy between the reviews and my experience is so extreme I can only assume that Panasonic has modified the camera recently.

One feature that sounded great but has been a little disappointing is facial recognition. This allows you to register faces - they are then recognized by the camera and the settings automatically optimised to ensure that they are in focus /correctly exposed. Their name also appears on the screen. I've registered my children but the camera confuses them with one another. True, the manual does warn that the similarity of siblings faces may cause this problem but it's still slightly disapointing when the camera mistakes my five year old daughter for my two year old son!

My advice: If you want a compact digital camera and are prepared to pay that bit extra, buy the TZ7. For the price it's an absolutely steal, but remember to add on the extra battery and a 4gig SDHC card...

To get the best photos, you obviously need an SLR and some great lenses. Hmm. Well, I have an SLR and some great lenses, but I tend to leave them at home when I go on a trip.
So I bought this TZ7 to take with me when I can't be bothered to take my SLR, which is nearly all the time. The TZ7 is small enough to go in a jacket pocket, or to hang unobtrusively from your belt. But is it good enough for anyone used to the quality of an SLR?
For me it is good enough, as long as you adjust your expectations. Which you have to do when you have such a small camera with a 25 to 300 zoom. Try getting a 25 to 300 zoom for an SLR! Even more amazing is that it's a very decently sharp lens. It's a little bit less than razor sharp at the extremes of the zoom range, but almost all my shots came out nice and sharp (but not too sharp, meaning the camera isn't over-processing things).
So the lens is good, and since the lens is the TZ7's party piece, that's a good thing.
Next on the list of killer features is HD video. This is 720p video, not `full' HD, but what do you expect? The great thing is that you can use the optical zoom while taking video, which is rare in these cameras. It zooms slowly so the noise of the zoom isn't picked up by the microphone but works very well. You get stereo sound too, and the quality of the sound is way ahead of any camera like this I've tried before. You might think that you wouldn't get proper stereo with microphones so close together, but it does a decent impersonation of it. Videos look pretty good, with the image stabiliser smoothing things out even at full zoom. Hold it carefully and it looks like you're using a tripod. You will need a decent computer and graphics card to play HD video though, or a compatible HD TV. You may need to buy an HDMI cable since you don't get one in the box.
The next great thing is the LCD. It has 460,000 pixels and looks fantastic. It even brightens and dims automatically depending on the ambient light, and you can see it from any angle, so Panasonic's 'high angle mode' is no longer necessary.
If you know what you're doing you can use the good smattering of `manual' features to good effect. I'm not talking about changing the aperture or shutter speed, but you can adjust exposure compensation, bracketing, white balance, ISO etc. You can set auto ISO to not go higher than 400 or 800, which is useful since things look less than great above ISO400.
If you can't be bothered with all that, set the mode dial to iA (intelligent auto) and leave everything to the camera. It works remarkably well, and you'll see the symbol change in the top corner of the LCD to tell you what scene it thinks you're taking. It even automatically goes into macro mode when set to iA.
But I use mine mostly in standard mode, and I keep the ISO to 80 for the very best results.
One of the best things about the TZ7 is the superb auto exposure system that gets the exposure spot on in an amazing variety of challenging situations that would completely fool my other cameras. Reliable auto-exposure, top-notch image stabilisation, really quick and accurate autofocus, a great LCD... these are the things that give you the confidence to pack the TZ7 as your only camera on a trip.
There must be downsides though... mustn't there? Not many, to be honest, unless you expect the unreasonable, like good performance at ISO1600, or in very low light. The TZ7 doesn't overcome the laws of physics.
But minor niggles for me are that there's a physical switch between record and playback mode, so unlike some cameras, you can't just half-press the shutter to get to record mode if you're in playback mode. Also, I'd prefer to have the metering options in the quick menu, which is otherwise very useful for changing settings. Face recognition I think is little more than a gimmick and one I couldn't get to work reliably. Face detection works very well though.
Actually, there is one other thing, and it's the battery. The TZ7 uses a battery with a Panasonic microchip in it. If you want a spare battery, and you probably will, since battery life is just average (HD video seems to sap battery life quite quickly), you'll have to buy a proper Panasonic one, and they're quite expensive. Third party batteries won't work, at least for now. I nearly knocked off the fifth star because of this.
But the bottom line is that the TZ7 captures sharp, well-exposed images pretty much all the time with the minimum of fuss. I like mine very much indeed.

If you've come to this page then chances are you already know these headphones are pretty special. I just thought I'd add my views after owning these for a week. For comparison I also own Senn HD250ii linears (now discontinued), HD650s and Shure SE530 in ears. All of these are very high-quality, and expensive headphones, so the benchmark is set pretty high....
The HD25s 2 ii (these are NOT the SP version, which are slightly lower sound quality, slightly cheaper versions) are tough, and businesslike. They aren't "fashion" headphones (I'm looking at you Dr Dre), which means while they aren't quite as pretty as Dre's Monster Beats, they sound rather better. If you also happen to be considering buying the Dr Dre 'phones then, having tested them, I found that they had very big bass but just average sound quality (the Pro's are pretty good to be fair, but the bass is still over-emphasized to my ears). If what you're after is very boomy, but flabby basslines that rattle your teeth, and the hell with the rest of the music, then the Dre's might well be for you. But if you want to hear your tracks the way they are supposed to sound...then the HD25's are light-years ahead.
The bass on the HD25s is big enough to tickle your eyeballs if you crank it, but it's not over emphasized, so is always tight and well-defined, with a nice tone and great punch. The mids are lush and well presented (though there is a very slight hole somewhere in there to my ears), and the highs are smooth and sweet although occasionally I find myself wishing the high frequencies were pushed a bit further back like in the HD650s. I personally like a slightly rolled-off sound in headphones, as it's the high frequencies that can really damage your ears, and these things can get damn loud!! Despite this there are no problems with nasty sibilance with these cans, and the highs really sparkle well on most tracks. Be aware though that these cans can go VERY loud, if you want bleeding ears then they can certainly be cranked to painful volumes.
The sound isolation is good. Not as good as my in-ear phones in my view, but as good as it gets for the supra-aural design. In most circumstances, including on my commute on the the train, it's still all too easy to forget where you are and escape into the music.
The soundstage is pretty narrow, even for closed cans, but not terribly so...each instrument is still easy to follow from left to right. The separation between instruments is surprisingly distinct. The soundstage would really only be a problem if you plan on listening just to classical music, or very sparse edm; in those cases the Sennheiser HD650 area a way better option, with a fantastic open and spacious sound. But you can't wear HD650s outside the house, and they cost almost double what these do! But there are other options that might suit classical music slightly better...
The cable is steel, so it won't break (unlike the cable on my shure se530s). Some people like to change the cable for expensive copper ones. I don't personally believe it's worth the bother, even if it does marginally widen the soundstage. The cable on these is tough as nails, yet the sound is still much more than adequate. And tough means they're perfect for travelling. The components are all replaceable too...bonus.
I'm going to use these next time I DJ, and I also use them for some dance music production. As reference headphones go they are great, very clear and revealing, so a good choice for budding bedroom producers...especially for the more dance-oriented genres.
All in all, I'd highly recommend these to pretty much everyone. 5 stars.
